Driving West

Monroe and Jason took turns sleeping and driving, and when the opportunity arose, they parked the trailer and slept a few hours here and there. They avoided the toll roads and were careful not to go over the speed limit unless they were following other fast-moving travelers. Whenever Jason asked where they were headed, Cassidy answered simply, “West.”

They drove through hot, dry, flat land with few houses and little variety. Eventually the flat turned to hills, and then to what Jason first thought were clouds on the horizon but turned out to be mountains.

“Almost there,” Cassidy said. He lit a cigarette. Jason rolled down the window.

“We’re hiding in the mountains?” Jason asked, too eagerly.

“You wish.” He blew smoke into Jason’s face. “Come on, baby,” he said, patting the dashboard. “You can do it.”

The next thing Jason knew they were stopped. He must have dozed off. He looked around. It was dark. Where was Cassidy? He got out of the car. They were parked on a narrow dirt road, surrounded by trees. He wanted to call out, but the silence overwhelmed him. A panic grew in his belly and was making its way up through his body when he heard a little snort.

He turned toward the trailer. Of course! Cassidy was sleeping in the trailer and had left him asleep in the car. He fumbled in the dark, but finally made it into the trailer and found the other bed. Before he closed his eyes, he checked the time: three a.m. He guessed they would be driving again soon.
